2009 and we're on the move!

From holidaying in Tasmania to living and working there. In May Carol begins a placement with the Synod of Victoria and Tasmania and Colin will follow as soon as he has a placement. Carol will be located in Launceston and hopefully Colin won't be too far away from Launceston - but then in Tasmania nowhere is "too far away".

Vandals in West Moonah

When Colin went outside to take Adam to work this morning they discovered that the back windscreen of our car had been smashed. Nothing had been taken and there were no signs of what had caused the damage. We called the police for the insurance claim. It looks like it was probably vandals.

No-one in Tasmania has a replacement in stock so it can't be fixed until we get to Melbourne on Monday morning. The Windscreen O'Briens people have been great and have taped a temporary plastic window in place for us. It is quite a good job and will be fine to travel to Devonport with.

It is a bit of a sad finish to the holiday, but we were lucky they didn't do anymore damage to the car. It should all be covered by insurance so that is good.

Duck Hole Lake

Duck Hole Lake

Thursday - we headed for Dover and a "short" walk which was supposed to take one hour but took us over two hours. It was an easy walk alongside a stream and when you arrived at the Lake there was even a platypus to be seen. Unfortunately it was too far away to get a photo.

Almost time to head home

We have just a few days left in Hobart. Today we headed to the east coast - just 60 kms away to do some more wine shopping. Very picturesque. The next few days are pretty laid back really - no grand plans - just a bit of looking around.

Today I posted parcels to each of the grandchildren.

Sunday we head for Devonport to catch the boat to Melbourne. Then from Melbourne to Bright where we will be staying at "The Studio", Ashwood Cottages (www.ashwoodcottages.com.au). From Bright we go to Mudgee and will be staying at "The Church" (www.thechurch-mudgee.com.au). Our last night away will be in Armidale (www.cotswoldgardens.net).

A night in Launceston

When Helen finished work on Friday we headed for Launceston. Adam caught the bus from Hobart. We spent the night at a very old inn - Pennyroyal. On Saturday morning we headed for "Bay of Fires" winery.

Another photo from Cradle Mountain

And a possum came to visit!

Who remembers the possum at the Bunyas?

If you do you will also know why Helen was not impressed that Adam wanted to make a pet out of this possum who tried to share our bbq dinner on Saturday night.

Cradle Mountain

Wet!
Windy!
Wild!
Spectacular!
Some snow flurries - but the snow melted as it hit the ground.

We were there from Saturday afternoon to Monday morning.

This is definitely a place to visit again.

We stayed at Mrs Philpott's - a B&B in Burnie

A week in Burnie

Just over a week ago we headed to Burnie. Helen was working there for the week and we intended to have a look around the north-west. We did do some touring but we also did a fair bit of nothing which was probably good for us.

We had a one day trip into Launceston to have a bit of a look around the place - could we really live there?

We also went to Guide Falls near Burnie.

Low Head

You can even book holidays in the Lighthouse keeper's cottages. We didn't bother to ask about the cost!

Bridport jetty

At least the old jetty. We didn't find a new one!

Giant Cuttlefish

The Cuttlefish on the beach are huge. The ball thing in front of them was larger than a tennis ball.

More photos from the north-east

The Blue Lake - apparently it is green in the winter and blue in the summer and you can't swim in it. It is very acidic and has high aluminum content because of all the tin mining that happened to create the hole in the first place.

Exploring the North-East

Saturday 6th September
Last Monday we met our friend Meg Evans in Oatlands and then drove to Branxholm innorth-east Tasmania. We were the first guests at the Tin Dragon Trail Cottages which are being developed by Graham and Christine on their property on the banks of the Ringarooma River. They have one of four cottages finished and plan to have the others ready in the next few weeks. The cottages are well appointed, very comfortable and generously supplied with breakfast from oats and muesli to bacon, eggs and sausages. Graham and Christine are also developing an Interpretative Centre which tells the story of Chinese tin mining in the area in general and on their property in particular.

On Tuesday we explored the local area. On Wednesday we drove to the north-east coast and visiting Mussleroe Bay ('big' and 'little') and Cape Portland. We did our best to stand on the very north-eastern tip of Tasmania. On Thursday we went to Bridport (a fishing village on the north coast) and then to George Town and Low Head on the Tamar estuary. Low Head was quite pretty with its series of lighthouses. We also visited a couple of wineries. On Friday we drove home through some country lanes, stopped at a lavender farm (Helen says the car smells of "old ladies") and then had lunch in the historic village of Evandale. On the way home we called into the Cadbury factory shop - wow - half-price chocolates!

First weekend in Hobart

On Saturday we had brunch at Salamanca Markets and then drove to the top of Mt Wellington for Adam's first experience of snow.

On Sunday we headed for Russell Falls and Lake Dobson in the Mt Field National Park which is an easy drive from Hobart. Stray snowballs and a mini snowman were part of the day's activities.

We made it!

After a delayed start we are in Hobart. We left one week late on Tuesday 26th stopping at Coonabarabran and Cobram on the way to Melbourne. We visited wineries at Shelmerdine and Hanging Rock - both carefully chosen by Colin and he wasn't disappointed. The Spirit of Tasmania crossing was a first for Carol (Colin had travelled to Australia by ship). The meal in the ship's restaurant was excellent and the cabin very comfortable. There was one rough patch early in the trip but otherwise it was smooth sailing. On Friday we wandered our way from Devonport to Hobart via Anver's Chocolates, the Raspberry Farm and quite a few country roads.
